Mike Tubbs was sworn in as Morehouse Parish's new Sheriff on June 30. He is taking the reins from Danny McGrew, who served two terms as Sheriff. Jeff Winnon was sworn in as the chief civil deputy, and Brian Shoemaker took an oath as the chief criminal deputy. All of Morehouse's other deputies were also sworn in at this time. Family, friends and the community celebrated with the new Sheriff.

The Morehouse Parish Sheriff Office held its 12th Annual Youth Summer Camp at Chemin-A-Haut State Park this week. About 45 children attended the three-day event and enjoyed sports, swimming, playing with a dunking booth and a fire hose, and riding in a MedLife ambulance, among other activities.

A memorial service was held Feb. 24, 2008 for Cpt. James Wayne "Gabby" Gates. A native of Mer Rouge, Gates was listed as Missing In Action following a mission over Laos in 1966. The United States Army officially declared Gates Killed In Action in 1977. The service was held at Mer Rouge Cemetery.

The pilot episode for what producers believe may become a weekly television series was shot Nov. 16-17 in Bastrop. "NewsClips In Black & White" went to Brister's Barber Shop and Diamond Cuts using high-definition cameras and recording equipment to film customers talking with their barber about political, personal and social issues.
